Two Hamilton County, Ohio Sheriff's deputies were injured while on the scene of a crash on a highway Tuesday morning.
Deputies Larry Henderson and Kevin Statzer were responding to a crash on the ramp from westbound I-74 to southbound I-275 around 10:30 a.m. when a driver lost control of his vehicle, according to WLWT-TV.
A driver in a Chevrolet Cobalt failed to see traffic slowing as he approached the scene of the crash and took evasive action, causing the vehicle to spin counter-clockwise, leave the left side of the road and veer onto the shoulder striking Henderson's parked cruiser. The front of the vehicle hen struck Statzer.
Statzer suffered a broken leg and briefly lost consciousness after his head hit the ground.
"Unfortunately, Deputy Kevin Statzer was struck pretty hard, actually went airborne 6-8 feet in the air and landed hard on the back of his head," Hamilton County Sheriff's spokesman Mike Robison told the news station. "He lost consciousness at the scene. We thought he was going to be AirCared but due to the weather, that was not possible."
Statzer was taken to UC Medical Center where he underwent surgery for a fractured leg and other non-life-threatening injuries to his lower extremities. He was listed in fair condition.
Henderson was struck by debris from the Cobalt and was treated at the scene.
The driver of the Cobalt was treated and released.
Officials said that neither alcohol nor drugs were factors in the crash, which is currently under investigation.
