Missouri Officer Shot; Suspect in Custody

A police officer in Independence, Missouri responding to a reported assault at a motel Wednesday night was shot by a suspect.

Officers responded to the Deluxe Inn at 10301 East U.S. 40 at approximately 7:19 p.m. after receiving a call from one of the rooms at the motel, according to The Examiner.

The wounded officer was shot shortly after arriving on the scene and was hit by a single round, department spokesman John Syme told the newspaper.

The suspected gunman was quickly taken into custody without officers having to return fire.

The officer was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and was said to be "doing fine" around 10 p.m.

It is unclear who made the 911 call or if the motel room had any other occupants inside at the time of the shooting.

The incident is currently under investigation.
