A New Jersey State Police patrol car struck another from behind while joining a pursuit Sunday morning.

The troopers -- one in a marked cruiser and another in an unmarked vehicle -- were traveling north on I-287 when the crash took place, according to The Star-Ledger.

Both troopers were transported to Morristown Medical Center where they were treated and released the same day, spokesman Lt. Brian Polite told the newspaper.

Polite added that although one of the troopers was in an unmarked vehicle, both were aware they were joining the pursuit.

The pursuit began shortly after 7 a.m. when a trooper attempted to stop a Mazda driven by 22-year-old Alejandra Ruales-Andrade. Officials said the woman was reportedly swerving and did not stop when the trooper activated his lights and siren.

"The nature of a trooper's job is to get to a location as quickly as possible to provide help to those who are in need," Polite said. "Unfortunately, it can lead to an accident. This is the nature of our job."

Ruales-Andrade was eventually stopped, arrested and charged with third-degree eluding police.
