A Kentucky State Police trooper driving home stopped an assault on a woman Monday.

Trooper Jeffrey McWhorter was on his way home following training in Frankfort when he spotted a vehicle pulled off the right shoulder of Interstate 64 near the 63 mile marker, according to a department news release.

McWhorter observed a man -- identified as 40-year-old Travis Phillips -- attempting to pull a woman out of the passenger side of an SUV and then got on top of her and started choking her.

As the trooper approached the vehicle, Phillips turned to him and was armed with a knife.

McWhorter drew his Taser and, after giving the suspect several verbal commands to drop the knife and get on the ground, he deployed the device.

After detaining Phillips, McWhorter tended to the woman and Woodford County EMS was notified and responded to the scene.

The female was treated at the scene and released by EMS. Phillips suffered a self-inflicted knife wound and was transported to a local hospital.

He was charged with assault, terroristic threatening and resisting arrest.
