A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent took his own life in a waterfront park in New York City on Friday.

Officials said that the incident occurred inside Pier 40 in Hudson River Park in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan at around 11 a.m. when the federal agent shot himself in the head with his .40 caliber service pistol, according to The New York Daily News.

The agent walked into the building -- housing park offices and several soccer fields -- and shot himself while in a walkway on the ground floor.

Emergency responders transported the 42-year-old to Lenox Hill Hospital where he was pronounced head.

The agent, who has not been identified, worked at a field office blocks away from where the shooting occurred.

"Tragically, a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deportation officer from the New York field office suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound and has passed away," ICE said in a statement Friday afternoon. "ICE's Office of Professional Responsibility is reviewing the matter and coordinating with the New York Police Department on the investigation."
