South Carolina Police Officer Struck by Vehicle

Columbia Police Officer Pete Conklin underwent surgery for his injuries and is currently recovering at the ICU.

A Columbia, South Carolina police officer was seriously injured after he was struck by a vehicle Tuesday evening.

Officer Pete Conklin was assisting a driver whose car had broken down in the far right lane of Interstate 126 near the Broad River Road bridge around 6 p.m. when he a vehicle hit him, according to WLTX-TV.

The five-year veteran assigned to the Metro Region's Community Response Team was transported to a local hospital and underwent surgery for his injuries -- the most serious of which were to his arm. He is currently recovering in the ICU.

Officials say that 29-year-old James Bigsby was driving a 2014 Honda Civic when he hit the officer.

The crash is currently under investigation.
