A Louisville police officer was shot and wounded late Saturday night and authorities were searching for his suspected gunman.

Officer Kyle Carrol was on patrol when the shooting occured near 23d and Magazine streets around 11:06 p.m., accoridng to WLKY-TV

Officials said the officer recognized a man, identified as 22-year-old Jacquan Crowley, from an arrest he had made in the past and became concerned after he turned away from him as he drove past. Carrol made a u-turn, a which point the man began running.

The one-and-a-half-year veteran of the force stopped and exited his patrol car and took off on foot after the man. The pursuit lasted a short distance and went over at least one fence. After jumping the fence, Crowley fired a shot at Carrol, who was struck in the chest.

The wounded officer was transported to University Hospital where he was listed in stable condition.

"He is alert, he is talking to us and we are very very hopeful for his recovery," the Lousiville Police Department said in a statement. "His family is with him."

Crowley, who fled the scene, is considered to be armed and dangerous and is described as an African-American standing 5 feet, 11 inches; weighing about 135 pounds with his hair in dreadlocks.

A manhunt was launched for Crowley and the shooting remains under investigation.
