A Hidalgo County, Texas Sheriff’s deputy died Tuesday morning of a self-inflicted gunshot wound she suffered outside a residence.
Officers responded to the residence near the intersection of Houston and Second streets in downtown McAllen around 7:20 a.m. after someone reported that Deputy Celina Flores was outside behaving strangely, according to The Monitor.
Officials said that as the officers arrived on the scene, the 32-year-old deputy shot herself. She was rushed to a local hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Flores began her career with the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office about four years ago as a dispatcher. She was appointed the department's public information officer late last year.
"We have lost one of our own and our hearts are broken. My thoughts and prayers are with the family, my Deputies, and my staff," Sheriff Eddie Guerra said in a statement. "The law enforcement community is a family, when one hurts, we all hurt. I ask that you continue to pray for my Deputies and staff as they continue to serve you in this time of loss."
