A Pima County, Arizona Sheriff's deputy lost his left eye after a woman intentionally kicked him with her boot heel during a DUI arrest Saturday night.

Authorities said that Yesennia Gonzalez became combative while being detained by Sgt. Mark Bustamante near East Drexel Road and South Alvernon Way around midnight , according to Tucson News Now.

"She became physically resistant and deliberately began kicking," Deputy Cody Gress said in a statement. "Gonzalez intentionally kicked traffic unit sergeant Mark Bustamante in his left eye with the heel of her boot."

Bustamante was rushed to a local hospital, but doctors were unable to save his eye.

The 100 Club of Arizona will be stepping in to help the deputy.

"When you think about the injury that the deputy received in this case, it's really as life altering as any other injury," said Jim Kirk, a retired police officer with the 100 Club of Arizona.

Gonzales also kicked another deputy who was on the scene and is facing two counts of aggravated assault on an officer, one count of resisting arrest and one DUI charge.
