A Yonkers, New York police officer was shot in the face while responding to a call Monday evening.
A female officer was investigating reports of a suspicious vehicle occupied by two men at the corner of Marshall Road and Ridge Drive around 8 p.m. when the shooting occurred, according to WCBS-TV.
Officials said that of the men pulled out a handgun and opened fired, hitting the officer once in the jaw.
"The car was dispatched, as they approached the car they immediately were met with gunfire," Yonkers Police Commissioner Charles Gardner told reporters.
Police returned fire, striking one of the suspects.
The wounded police officer was rushed to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi in serious but stable condition.
Judging by the number of shots fired, Commissioner said she was lucky. "This could've been much worse," Gardner said. "Thank God the officer did not sustain life-threatening injuries. She was struck, she’s in serious but stable condition, thank God she's going to be okay."
One of the suspects was taken into custody, while the other was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment and was undergoing surgery Monday night.
A handgun was recovered at the scene.
The shooting is currently under investigation.
