Texas Police Officer Killed, Another Injured After Being Struck During Traffic Stop

A Corpus Christi police officer was killed and another officer was injured after they were struck by a vehicle Friday.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- A Corpus Christi police officer was killed and another officer was injured after they were struck by a vehicle during a traffic stop Friday night.

Police officers stopped a vehicle for racing on the Highway 358 around 9:43 p.m. struck the marked vehicles and two officers who were on the scene, according to KSAT-TV.

Officer Alan McCollum and Officer Michael Love were both transported to a local hospital. McCollum succumbed to his injuries while Love was listed in stable condition.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the officers, identified as 26-year-old Brandon Portillo, was charged with intoxication manslaughter, a first-degree felony; intoxication assault, a third-degree felony and driving with a suspended license, a misdemeanor.

McCollum, who was 46-years-old, served with the Corpus Christi Police Department for 7 years and was a 21-year highly decorated Veteran of the United States Army. He was awarded numerous decorations, medals, badges, citations, campaign ribbons; to include being a recipient of the Bronze Star.

"We mourn the loss of a great co-worker, friend, husband and father. There are few words to express the pain in our loss not only to the Corpus Christi Police Department but to our community," the police department wrote in a statement.

McCollum is survived by his wife and three children.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
