Meet Mass. Police Officer's New Partner: Snookems the Flying Squirrel

Nov. 28, 2022
A bond was forged between a Plymouth police officer and a wide-eyed flying squirrel during an unexpected encounter while the officer was directing traffic.

A Massachusetts police officer was directing traffic when he was suddenly assisted by a furry, flying friend.

The Plymouth Police Department recently posted photos of a strange encounter Officer Andrew Whelan had while directing traffic. During that assignment, Whelan "flinched a little," and a flying squirrel came at him.

The unexpected run-in initially startled Whelan, but the officer "realized the little guy wanted to play." Whelan went on to call the wide-eyed interloper "Snookems."

Although Snookems isn't on the department's payroll, the squirrel and Whelan have formed a working relationship.

"Rumor has it, When Officer Whelan goes on Patrol, Snookems might be in his pocket …," the department stated in an online post.
