Pa. Woman Invites Police to Her Home for Christmas Celebration

Dec. 26, 2022
Marie Rushanan, 80, invited Minersville's police officers to join her and over a dozen guests for Christmas this year, an invitation she said she should have extended a long time ago.

MINERSVILLE, PA—A Minersville police officer said he appreciated an invitation to spend time at a borough home for Christmas.

Patrolman Ethan Powell visited for about 90 minutes Sunday with Marie Rushanan. He talked about past Christmases and left with a meal and cookies. He planned to gather with friends after his eight-hour shift.

"It's about celebration," said Marie Ottaviano, 51, of Pottsville, daughter of Rushanan, 80.

Rushanan visited the Minersville Police Department Tuesday and told Police Chief Michael Combs that officers are welcome to stop by for the holiday. She said that she should have extended the invitation a long time ago.

Rushanan's home is always filled with family and friends during Christmas. Earlier Sunday, 13 people were at her house; 16 people were there Saturday.

Ottaviano said the home has always been "the gathering place for family," especially when she was younger. She said the home has a lot of memories, and she treasures the time spent with family and friends.

"When you look around the Christmas table this year, appreciate who is there," Ottaviano said.

"We've been coming here for years on Christmas," said Gussie Laplaca, Rushanan's sister.

The house is well decorated, featuring a white Christmas tree with blue and white decorations and 16 mangers.

"It's the season," Rushanan said.
