Pa. Police Officer Suffers Medical Emergency while Making Arrest

An Allentown police officer was "likely saved" by the quick response of medics and colleagues after suffering a medical emergency while trying to make an arrest.

An Allentown officer suffered what city police are describing as a medical emergency as he tried to take a wanted person into custody.

The officer was attempting to make the arrest in the 600 block of North 9th Street just after 12:45 p.m. Monday, city police said. Emergency aid was rendered on scene and the officer was taken to an area hospital for treatment, police said.

The officer was expected to survive, officials said Monday. The officer’s condition was not immediately available Tuesday morning.

An Allentown police supervisor said the officer’s life was “likely saved” thanks to the quick response of law enforcement and medics. The wanted person was taken into custody. It’s unclear what the charges were against the individual.

Allentown Police Chief Charles Roca couldn’t immediately be reached for more information.

Allentown Mayor Matt Tuerk said on Facebook Monday he visited the officer at the hospital. The officer was in “good spirits,” surrounded by his family and expected to recover, the mayor said.

“Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers,” Tuerk said on Facebook.
