Trumbull police reunited a woman with her dog after officers responded to a call concerning her cries for help as she clung to vegetation after falling into the swift currents of the Pequonnock River while trying to rescue her animal.

TRUMBULL — A woman trying to save her dog after it fell into the fast-moving water of the Pequonnock River Monday was nearly swept away herself before being rescued by police, authorities said. The dog, too, survived the ordeal.

Trumbull police said in a Facebook post officers responding to a 911 call heard the woman crying out for help while holding on to vegetation to keep from drowning near Twin Brooks Park. She ended up in the water after trying to rescue her dog, which the river had swept away while she was on the phone, they said.

An off-duty firefighter and a Trumbull police officer pulled the woman to safety, police said.

The woman was reunited with her dog after it was heard barking downstream, police said.

The woman was evaluated by medical personnel on site but declined further treatment, police said.
