Conn. Police Officer Helps Save Injured Hawk—and It's Not His 1st Bird Rescue

Aug. 30, 2024
Enfield Police Officer Shane Lewis, who's no stranger to rescuing birds in trouble, recently helped save a red-tailed hawk that injured itself when it crashed into a window

ENFIELD, CT — A local officer helped rescue an injured hawk Tuesday, police said, and it wasn't the first time he did so in the course of his duty.

After a red-tailed hawk crashed into a window near Moody Road Tuesday morning, Enfield police wrote in a post on Facebook, Officer Shane Lewis responded to assist. The hawk was taken to A Place Called Hope, a rehabilitation center for birds of prey in Killingworth, police said.

"After about 6 hours of rest the hawk regained its strength and was safely released," police wrote in their post.

Lewis, who told CT Insider in 2023 that he has been around animals his entire life, also rescued a red-tailed hawk in Enfield in November after it apparently collided with a car. That hawk, which suffered head trauma, was returned to the wild five weeks later with Lewis' help.
