A fugitive task force was at a Chattanooga apartment complex to make an arrest when a suspect tried to drive away, dragging a U.S. marshal, who fatally shot the man.

A U.S. marshal with a fugitive task force was trying to make an arrest when he got dragged by a vehicle and killed the driver, Tennessee authorities said.

The U.S. Marshals Service Smokey Mountain Fugitive Task Force went to an apartment complex in Chattanooga the afternoon of Oct. 8 seeking a wanted suspect, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

They started speaking with residents of the apartment complex when an altercation broke out involving two men trying to leave the complex in a vehicle, investigators said.

The marshals said they tried to stop the vehicle, but 44-year-old Samuel Story is accused of backing up the vehicle and dragging a marshal who got caught in the door.

The marshal then shot Story, who was taken to a hospital and died from his injuries, investigators said. The marshal was treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, according to law enforcement.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation declined to tell McClatchy News whether Story was the suspect the marshals were seeking. The agency is investigating the incident.
