Driver Blows Past School Bus in No-Passing Zone, but Misses Wash. Sheriff

Nov. 5, 2024
Thurston County's sheriff was behind a school bus that had just dropped off a child in the Yelm area when a car passed both of them in a no-passing zone. And that's when the driver's problems started.

Thurston County Sheriff Derek Sanders made a traffic stop on Monday and cited the driver for multiple violations, the sheriff announced in his own social media post.

Sanders was following a school bus, and another driver in a Honda Civic was following him, in the Yelm area Monday afternoon, he said.

"Right after the bus dropped a child off, I watched as the Honda behind me decided to pass both the school bus and I in a no pass zone around a corner through an area that is a 50 mph zone," Sanders said in his post.

He pulled the driver over, then discovered the following: expired vehicle tabs from 2018 and that the driver did not have a valid license. Sanders also cited the driver for reckless driving.

The car was later impounded, he said.

"To those who don't mind putting our children at risk: I don't mind watching you walk home," Sanders said.
