NEW LONDON, CT — Police Chief Brian Wright on Wednesday credited three of his detectives with rescuing a distressed man who state police said was attempting to jump off the northbound side of the Gold Star Bridge on Tuesday.
Wright said Detectives Justin Lawrie, Marco Zandri and Melissa Schafranski-Broadbent responded to the 2:52 p.m. call for a man "in elevated crisis."
A state police spokesman on Wednesday said state troopers also responded but were not primarily responsible for getting the individual to safety. On Tuesday, state police originally said troopers rescued the man.
The New London detectives persuaded the man to be taken to the hospital for treatment, according to Wright.
"Their ability to de-escalate a potentially dangerous situation with such empathy and skill is a testament to their training and commitment to our communities," Wright said in a statement. "It is moments like these that highlight the importance of our mission and the positive impact we can have on the lives of those we serve."
State police said he was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital.
"The outstanding job by Detectives Lawrie, Zandri, and Schafranski-Broadbent, along with the compassion and understanding they exhibited, truly exemplifies the dedication and professionalism we strive for within our department," Wright said.
