JASPER COUNTY, IN — A state police trooper and three others, including an off-duty paramedic, are being credited with helping to revive a crash victim Wednesday afternoon along Interstate 65.
Indiana State Police said they were called out around 4 p.m. Wednesday to a report of the crash along the northbound lanes of the highway near DeMotte.
A blue 2008 Chevrolet Silverado was northbound when the driver lost control and ran off the roadway, police said.
"The vehicle rolled over and ultimately struck a tree located approximately 50 feet from the roadway," according to ISP.
Trooper Martin Benner reportedly arrived to find a passenger of the vehicle unconscious and not breathing.
He immediately began performing CPR on the individual and was assisted by the driver and others, including off-duty Rensselaer paramedic Theron Bogan.
The group continued CPR for about 20 minutes until emergency medical personnel could reach the crash site on the icy roads.
"EMS was then able to revive the individual and he was transported by ambulance to Franciscan Health Crown Point for further treatment," police said.
The driver of the vehicle was not injured, police said, and neither drugs nor alcohol were factors in the crash.
