April 8, 2025
After a Hollywood police officer made a stop, the driver jumped out of his vehicle and attacked the officer, fracturing his jaw before bystanders came to help.

An Alabama driver attacked an officer who was pulling him over, sending him to a hospital with injuries, police said.

According to the Hollywood Police Department, officer Dhruvil Patel stopped the driver — identified as 30-year-old Steven Kyle Corneilson — at about 6 p.m. April 4.

Corneilson then got out of his vehicle and attacked the officer, leaving Patel with a fractured jaw and other injuries, Police Chief Cecil Davis told McClatchy News.

Several people, including employees at a local business, saw the incident happen and rushed out to help, according to an April 4 news release by the police department.

Patel was taken to a hospital for his injuries, police said.

Davis told McClatchy News on April 7 that Patel was released from the hospital.

“We’re just waiting to get his results back,” Davis said. “Other than that, I mean he’s good to go.”

Corneilson was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, second-degree assault on a police officer and resisting arrest, Davis said. He remains in police custody.

Hollywood is a 107-mile drive northeast from Birmingham.
