A Detroit police officer was seriously injured after being run down by a tow truck Wednesday.
The incident happened as police were finishing a traffic stop, WJBK-TV reports. That's when a tow truck swerved toward the lights and activity of the stop, striking an officer.
"He has all kinds of broken bones, lacerated liver, a collapsed lung," said Assistant Chief Charles Fitzgerald. "He just underwent another surgery this morning."
According to police, the tow truck driver had outstanding traffic warrants and had been operating on a suspended license. He was taken into custody by police.
The officer is listed in temporary serious condition. Fitzgerald said he is in good spirits and his father, who is a veteran police officer, has been with him in the hospital.
"A very good officer, hard-working, a young man smiles all the time even last night," he added.
