Jim Craige from Leonardo speaks with Officer Media Group Editorial Director Frank Borelli about the Street Sentry License Plate Recognition System. While he was a police officer with the Alexandria Police Department, Craige focused a lot on mobile technology including ALPR systems. He notes, “Having the opportunity to use and manage the systems gives me good insight as to how they work, and how they are really effective as a law enforcement tool.” The ELSAG Street Sentry is a solar-powered fixed camera which sole focus is to read the license plates of cars that pass by. “Depending on how we aim it, we may aim it to capture two lanes going in one direction, which would be both rear plates, or on a two lane road with a divided double yellow line we can aim it so that it picks up the front plate of the oncoming vehicles as well as the rear plate of the vehicles that have passed by. It has the ability, depending on how we set it up, to pick up a couple of lanes of traffic."
