KOKOMO, Indiana -- Eight Kokomo Police Department officers were taken by ambulance to St. Vincent Kokomo Tuesday night after they "encountered some sort of chemical agent" while serving a search warrant on the city's north side, according to city officials.

One additional officer was treated at the hospital for exposure, according to a KPD press release.

At 9:10 p.m., Kokomo Deputy Mayor David Tharp confirmed to the Tribune that all affected officers were alert and walking. And by early Wednesday morning, KPD Maj. Brian Seldon had confirmed that all affected officers were released from the hospital.

"Officers served a warrant for the house on the north side," said Tharp in a text message. "They encountered some sort of chemical agent. [Eight] officers were taken to the hospital. All are alert and walking."

The entire 1800 block of North Wabash Street was blocked off following the incident, and at least seven people, including one juvenile, were detained. A house at 1805 N. Wabash St. was marked off with crime scene tape.

KPD officers, Emergency Management Agency officials, Kokomo Fire Department officials and Howard County sheriff's deputies were on the scene.
