A veteran Minnehaha County, South Dakota Sheriff's deputy died Tuesday while on duty.

Deputy Steve Maciejewski collapsed while he was working his assignment at the 24-7 desk at the Public Safety Building, according to The Argus Leader.

The 23-year-veteran of the department was transported to Sanford Hospital, but attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

Maciejewski joined the department in 1995 in the jail as a corrections officer before he was promoted to deputy in the jail. He later moved on to the Patrol Division and was recently assigned to the 24-7 program.

"Steve’s steadiness, good nature, and excellent decision making was well known. Not from him, as he was a quiet man who would talk about his children and family, but not about himself," Sheriff Mike Milstead said in a statement. "But we knew him to be a solid deputy, devoted family man, and great friend. Steve loved his work and those he worked with- and for. He will truly be missed."

Funeral arrangements are pending.
