Detroit Police Commanding Officer Dies of COVID-19

DETROIT — A second member of the Detroit Police Department has died from COVID-19, a Detroit police spokesman confirmed Tuesday evening.
The individual was a commanding officer, though rank, name, age and other information were not being immediately released, Detroit Police Cpl. Dan Donakowski said.
It was not clear yet whether all the officer’s family had been notified, Donakowski said. Further details are expected to be released at a later point.
When reached Tuesday evening, police Chief James Craig declined to comment.
City officials announced earlier in the day that a 38-year-old Detroit 911 call taker had died. The man, who worked for the city for 11 years, had tested positive for COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by the novel coronavirus.
Mayor Mike Duggan said this week that 282 police department employees were in quarantine and nine have tested positive.
