DURHAM, North Carolina -- A Durham police officer saved the life of a baby who nearly drowned Monday afternoon.
Officer E.L. Gomez responded to a drowning call involving an 11-month-year-old boy in a bath tub or shower on Leon Street shortly after 12:30 p.m., according to a news release.
When Gomez arrived, family members handed her the child who was not breathing and did not have a pulse. She used her training and quick thinking to administer CPR to the child, until he began breathing on his own. Paramedics arrived and continued to treat the child and took him to the hospital by ambulance.
"Officer Gomez was able to deliver high quality CPR upon observing the child’s condition," her supervisor, Cpl. C.J. Wisnieski, said in a statement. "Officer Gomez was alone and surrounded by hysterical family members but was able to keep her cool and was able to communicate the situation."
Gomez says she was only doing her job and was happy she was there to help the child.
