Over 160,000 rounds of rifle ammunition meant for an Ohio police department were stolen this month.
The theft happened April 1 when pallets of Winchester 5.56 ammo worth $64,000 and earmarked for the Columbus Division of Police were taken from a warehouse in the city's Westbelt neighborhood, WBNS-TV reports. A delivery truck also was stolen in the heist.
Police were able to track down the two suspected thieves, who are accused of stealing from two warehouses. Officers recovered two stolen trucks, but the ammunition was not found.
“Anytime there's extra ammunition on the street it is concerning,” said Deputy Chief Smith Weir.
Columbus police, along with the ATF and the U.S. Attorney's Office, are investigating the incident.
