MIAMI BEACH, Fla. --
Two members of the New York Police Department's union traveled to South Florida as soon as they heard the news about their fellow officer who was shot at a boutique hotel on South Beach.
"It's very upsetting, very upsetting, that one of our own city detectives comes down on vacation and gets involved in this and is shot by somebody trying to rob him," said Detective Joseph Cusanelli.
Cusanelli identified the officer as Detective Harold Thomas, a 27-year veteran of the NYPD. He said Thomas' two sons, two sisters, and father were visiting him at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he remained in critical but stable condition. He was shot in the leg, Cusanelli said.
Thomas may have been the victim of an early-morning robbery at the 1233 Lofts at 12th Street and Collins Avenue, according to Cusanelli.
Eyewitnesses said they heard multiple gunshots and one witness believed Thomas was able to fire back.
According to Miami Beach police, at least two gunmen fled the scene.
Thomas will undergo a third surgery late Sunday, Cusanelli said.
"We're just doing everything we can to support the family and hopefully we can get Harold up to New York," Cusanelli said.
