April 16--Six Nassau police officers were injured during a confrontation with an armed man in Roosevelt early Sunday morning.
Police said they confronted Kelly Baldwin, 26, of Freeport, at 4:47 a.m. on West Raymond Avenue after receiving a 911 call about a man with a gun on Nassau Road. The officers told Baldwin to drop his handgun, but he did not comply, police said. One officer fired his gun at Baldwin when he turned suddenly toward the officers, police said.
The gunshot struck Baldwin in the elbow, police said. He continued to resist arrest, struggling with several officers, but was eventually taken into custody, police said.
Six officers were taken to hospitals to be treated for minor injuries, police said.
Nassau police did not immediately provide the names or conditions of the police officers, but later added that one suffered a leg injury, another suffered an undisclosed type of sprain and the remaining four were hospitalized as a precaution from being involved in the scuffle that ended in gunfire.
Baldwin, of East Seaman Avenue, was charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, resisting arrest and unlawful possession of marijuana, police said. He was taken to Nassau University Medical Center for the injury to his elbow, police said.
Baldwin will be arraigned when it is "medically practical," police said in a statement. The case is under investigation, police said.
