April 25--Chicago police discovered a man shot dead within a block of a Southwest Side high school and six others were wounded in separate shootings that occurred across the city in less than 12 hours.
In the most recent shooting, a 49-year-old man sitting in a car with two others was shot and wounded during an attempted holdup just before 2:30 a.m. this morning in the 8000 block of South Michigan Avenue in the city's Chatham neighborhood.
The victim was struck in the back and forearm and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in "stable condition," police said, citing early reports.
The gunman fled and hadn't been apprehended, police said.
The fatal shooting happened at about 11:35 p.m. Tuesday in the 7900 block of South Campbell Avenue, police said, citing early reports. It occurred just a block away from St. Rita of Cascia High School.
Officers found the 26-year-old man dead on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to the head. The victim was identified as Kenneth McCurty, of the 8000 block of South Artesian Avenue, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
People released few details, but said no arrests had been made.
Nearly an hour later -- just before 12:30 a.m. Wednesday -- Chicago Lawn district officers responded to a 25-year-old man wounded in the arm and leg at the rear of a home in the 6900 block of South Rockwell Avenue in the Marquette Park neighborhood.
The victim was taken to Christ Medical Center in stable condition, police said. Authorities were searching for a light-colored Nisaan or Saturn that the gunman was believed to have fled in.
In the Galewood neighborhood on the city's Northwest Side, police said a 42-year-old man was inside a tattoo shop in the 1600 block of North Mobile Avenue, when a male and female entered at about 11 p.m. Tuesday. The male pulled a handgun and opened fire, striking the victim multiple times, police said.
The victim was Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood and was expected to survive his wounds, police said.
At about 10:30 p.m., a 20-year-old man was shot in the forearm in a drive-by shooting in the 700 block of North Hamlin Avenue in the East Garfield Park neighborhood, police said.
The shots were fired from a dark-colored sedan that fled after the shooting. The victim was taken to Norwegian-American Hospital in good condition.
Earlier in the evening, just before 9 p.m., a 25-year-old man was shot in the leg in the 7000 block of South Jeffrey Boulevard in the South Shore neighborhood. The victim was taken to nearby Jackson Park Hospital and Medical Center in stable condition, police said.
The first shooting occurred at about 3:15 p.m., when a 19-year-old man was shot in the body in the 10400 block of South Wabash Avenue, police said. The victim was taken to Roseland Community Hospital in good condition.
No arrests had been made in any of the shootings.
In the first three months of this year, homicides in the city have soared by 60 percent, while nonfatal shootings have also risen sharply.
