Two Jacinto City police officers were shot Wednesday night and the suspected gunman is in custody following a standoff that ended early Thursday morning.
Lt. Dennis Walker was shot in the chest while Sgt. Jennifer Simpson-Castenada was shot in the arm and both were transported to local hospitals and are expected to fully recover, according to KPRC-TV.
Walker was flown to Memorial Hermann Hospital and police officials said that his bulletproof vest likely saved his life. Simpson-Castenada was taken to Lydon B. Johnson Hospital where she was treated for her injuries.
The officers were shot while questioning 17-year-old Edgar Omar Cuellar about a previous shooting at a home in the 10400 block of North Oswego around 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Jacinto City Police Chief Joe Ayala said that Cuellar fired three to four rounds after pulling a gun from his waistband, striking Walker and Simpson-Castenada.
A standoff ensued after Cuellar barricaded himself inside the home and ended after he was shot in the leg during an exchange of gunfire with a SWAT Team around 12:15 a.m. Thursday morning.
Cuellar was taken into custody and officials said his injuries were not considered life-threatening.
