MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. -- A police officer is recovering after being shot while training in Morehead City Wednesday morning.
Police officer Garrett Hardin was shot, according to information acquired by The Daily News.
The officer was transferred to Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City and then airlifted to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, police officials said.
The officer's condition was not released.
Police are withholding details of the shooting but confirmed the shot was fired at Morehead City Police Department.
Police did not release Hardin's name to ensure, "the privacy of the injured and the family will be respected and protected while this incident is being investigated," police officials said.
MCPD officials declined to comment Wednesday afternoon as to whether the officer was shot by another officer; the incident was a weapon misfire; how many shots were fired; if the shots were fired from a service weapon; where the gunshot wound was on the officer's body; the nature of the training; or who was involved in the training.
Morehead City Police Chief Wrenn Johnson said during a press conference Wednesday that the State Bureau of Investigations and the police department are investigating per SBI protocol.
"This is one of the hardest things you'll ever have to go through," Johnson said during the press conference held at the police station.
"There was and is no threat to public safety surrounding this incident," said MCPD officials in a press release.
Morehead City Mayor Jerry Jones said he was shocked to learn about the incident, but added that accidents happen.
"We learn and we improve," Jones said. "We're one big family, and we'll get through it."
