CHICAGO -- A Chicago police officer was shot in the hand around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday on the Far South Side, police said.
The male officer, whose age was not released, was among plainclothes officers who were making a street stop in the 9500 block of South Calumet Avenue in the Rosemoor neighborhood, Chicago police said in a statement to the media.
During the stop, a male ran from officers, police said, then turned around and fired shots at the officers during the pursuit, the statement said.
The officer was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in good condition, police said.
Police recovered a weapon from the scene, and a suspect is in custody, according to the statement.
The officer, in his 30s, was awake and talking with his family at the hospital, Chicago Fraternal Order of Police president Kevin Graham told WGN-TV.
The officers were wearing body cameras, according to the police statement.
The officers will be placed on administrative duties for 30 days, routine after such shootings.
Police did not say how many officers were there, or whether any returned fire.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating.
Officers clustered in an alley off Calumet just south of 95th, near an empty lot surrounded by a fence.
Two other nearby scenes were roped off with crime scene tape: A BP gas station at the corner of 95th Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and a parking lot outside of a former Walgreens.
A truck offering support services for the police officers set up a table with snacks and hot drinks, just outside of the crime scene tape that blocked off Calumet.
Detectives gathered around the truck, sipping on drinks out of white styrofoam cups before walking back into the crime scene.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
