Two Tennessee Police Officers Wounded

Newbern Police Officers Alex Martin and Cranston Fisk both suffered gunshot wounds during the altercation at Betty's Bar early Monday morning during a New Year's Eve celebration.

Two Newbern, Tennessee police officers were shot while responding to a disturbance call at a bar during a New Year's Eve celebration early Monday morning.

Officers Alex Martin and Cranston Fisk both suffered gunshot wounds during the altercation at Betty's Bar around 2:23 a.m., according to The State Gazette.

Both officers were transported to Tennova Regional Hospital in Dyersburg before being transferred to Regional One in Memphis. Martin was listed in stable condition after surgery Monday morning from a gunshot wound to the abdomen, while Fisk also was listed in stable condition after being shot in the leg and foot.

Martin is a 4-year veteran and has spend his last two years with Newbern, while Fisk will celebrate his first year on the force in March.

The city's mayor praised the actions of the two officers.

"Officers Alex Martin and Cranston Fisk showed great bravery and courage in the face of these horrific events," Newbern Mayor Justin Wright told the newspaper. "Their willingness to serve helped to protect the well being and lives of many individuals."

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is handling the investigation into the shooting.
