Norfolk police have enlisted the help of Virginia State Police to investigate the circumstances around an incident in which an officer and another person were shot.
At about 9:35 p.m. Wednesday, officers patrolling the 2700 block of Vincent Avenue attempted to investigate a pair of “suspicious” vehicles that were stopped in the road, according to a news release. Police said that when the officers approached, a man near the vehicles opened fire at the officers, prompting the officers to return fire.
The men fled, but one unnamed suspect was detained after a foot pursuit. One of the officers was shot but the injury is not considered life-threatening.
Another person sustained a gunshot wound, which is also not considered life-threatening, near the scene after the initial outburst of gunfire, police said. It is not clear how this person is connected to the incident.
No further information was available as of Thursday morning. The investigation is ongoing.
