An off-duty police officer in North Carolina was shot and wounded when he tried to break up a domestic disturbance late Tuesday.
The shooting happened at about 10 p.m. when Dunn Police Officer Joshua Elliott, who was off duty at the time, saw a man—identified as Daniel Locklear—assault a woman at a gas station in Linden, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating the incident. When Elliott tried to intervene, Locklear drew a handgun and began firing.
Elliott was struck, but he was still able to return fire. Locklear was struck several times as he fled the scene.
Deputies were able to catch up with Locklear, and he was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Upon his release, he will be arrested and faces multiple charges, incuding attempted murder.
Elliott also was to the hospital for his injuries. He was treated and eventually released.
