Authorities are searching for three suspects after a Florida police officer was seriously wounded in an ambush shooting during a home invasion early Monday.
"This is absolutely an ambush," said Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell during a news conference about the shooting. "This is absolutely a cowardly act. And absolutely, we will not tolerate this in our city. We will not have this in our city."
The incident happened at around 2:30 a.m. when police responded to a burglary at an apartment complex, the Tallahassee Democrat reports. According to the department, officers interrupted a drug-related home invasion, and they began pursuing a suspect who fled the scene on foot.
“During the foot pursuit, another involved suspect emerged from the residence and began firing at the officers,” a department release stated. “The rounds struck one of the responding officers, and they immediately returned fire.”
The wounded officer was rushed to hospital and underwent surgery. He was currently in stable condition.
A search has been ongoing for three suspects in the shooting. At 1 p.m., police pulled over and detained two men for questioning "to determine if they were involved," a police spokeswoman said. The men were not arrested.
"I assure you we will find them, and we will bring them to justice," said Revell.
