Ohio Deputy Shot in Leg Confronting Alleged Intoxicated Gunman

Sept. 30, 2024
A man brandishing a firearm while intoxicated is accused of opening fire during a domestic violence call and shooting a Lawrence County sheriff's deputy.

PROCTORVILLE, OH — A domestic violence call on Saturday night lead to a suspect shooting a Lawrence County deputy and the deputy firing back at the suspect.

At 10:16 p.m. on Saturday night, the sheriff's office got a call about a domestic violence complaint at 17 Township Road 1138 in Proctorville.

When officers entered the residence, a woman told them that Charles Eugene Martin II was intoxicated and brandishing a firearm.

When confronted, Martin fired a shot and hit a deputy in the leg. The officer returned fire and shot Martin.

The officers retreated from the house and then after two hours with officers from other departments, they entered the house and got Martin out.

He had multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to a hospital for medical care. He is in custody at the hospital and is being treated. Martin has been charged with felonious assault and attempted murder.

The deputy is being treated.

Because it is an officer-involved shooting, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation has taken over the scene and is investigating.

"I would like to thank the deputies and our local law enforcement partners for their brave and heroic efforts tonight," Sheriff Jeff Lawless said. "This very serious incident was brought to a conclusion in a safe and effective manner without further injuries."

He thanked the Lawrence County Drug and Major Crime Task Force, the Ironton Police Department, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the South Point Police Department, Chesapeake Police Department, Coal Grove Police Department, Lawrence County EMS, and the Rome Township Fire Department for their assistance.
