A male held hostage and used a human shield by an armed suspect was able to break free from his captor, who aimed his gun at Ravenna police officers before they opened fire.

CLEVELAND, OH — Police in Ravenna shot and killed a man who was using a person as “a human shield” during a confrontation with officers early Sunday, authorities say.

Police said in a statement that the man pointed a gun at officers moments before the shooting took place. The man’s identity was not released. State agents are investigating the incident.

Officers went to an apartment on Hazen Street about 1:30 a.m. for a report of a man with a gun sleeping on the floor, according to police and published reports. The statement said officers knocked on the door, which was open, and saw the man on the ground with a gun in his waistband.

Officers retreated and ordered the man to drop the weapon, according to the statement. The door closed, though officers continued to speak with the man.

The man then came out of the door “while using another male as a human shield.” The victim held hostage was able to break away, according to the statement, and the suspect then pointed a gun at officers. Two officers fired at him, killing him.

The officers were not hurt.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to call Ravenna police at 330-296-6486.
