KALAMAZOO, MI — A police officer and wanted subject are in the hospital after a shooting near the Kalamazoo Public Schools administration building.
Officers were attempting to apprehend a “wanted subject” when the subject pulled out a gun, according to a statement from the Kalamazoo Township Police Department.
Both the officer and the subject suffered gunshot wounds, police said.
While the incident occurred in the city of Kalamazoo, it was a Kalamazoo Township officer that was injured in the shooting.
Officers responded to the scene in the 1200 block of Howard Street at roughly 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 27.
Yellow crime scene tape was stretched near the entrance of the building in the parking lot.
More than a dozen law enforcement vehicles were on scene and the right lane of Howard Street was blocked for westbound traffic, as of 12:15 p.m.
A man on scene, who declined to provide his name, said he heard a drone near the building and a big commotion in the area as officers responded to the building.
The nearby middle school, Maple Street Magnet School for the Arts, is on lockdown, according to parents. Kalamazoo Public Schools officials could not be immediately reached for comment.
