Video: Chicago Police Give Female Chance to Flee Gunman During Call
- Chicago police fatally shot a man after he pointed a gun at officers trying to deescalate the domestic disturbance, allowing a woman to escape the gunman.
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA — A police officer on Sunday shot and wounded a person who investigators say was holding a knife to the throat of another person.
The incident happened around 10:15 p.m. in the 2400 block of Brasileno Dr., a residential community between Nimmo Parkway and Sandbridge Road. It was the third police-involved shooting in South Hampton Roads since Friday.
In Sunday night’s shooting, Virginia Beach police said they were called to the area for a domestic dispute. When officers arrived, they encountered a person armed with a knife who was holding it to the throat of another individual. Police have not yet disclosed whether the individuals were male or female, or how they were related.
One officer fired his weapon at the armed person. That individual was transported to a local hospital in stable condition. No officers or other individuals were injured, police said. The shooting is being investigated by the detective bureau and the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office.
The other two officer-involved shootings this past weekend occurred in Norfolk. Neither of those was fatal.
The first happened Friday afternoon in the Washington Park neighborhood. Police said they encountered a woman believed to be armed with a firearm and carrying a large bag. The woman ignored officers’ commands to put it down, according to police, then pulled out a weapon and aimed it at them. The officers fired several shots, striking her at least once. She was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The other shooting happened around 3:45 a.m. Sunday on Monticello Avenue, near MacArthur Mall. Police said they were responding to multiple reports of a person with a weapon when they saw a man with a firearm near a courtyard.
Officers fired after the man didn’t comply with their orders to put the gun down, according to the department. The man sustained a non-life-threatening wound. He was taken to a hospital for treatment and is expected to survive.
