A Paterson police officer fatally shot a person during an attempted carjacking in the city on Monday afternoon, authorities said.
The shooting occurred about 4:15 p.m. on Van Houten Street between Auburn and Straight streets, according to city police.
The police officer was in the area when he saw what he believed was a crime and tried to intervene before firing his service weapon, killing the suspect, authorities said.
The names of the officer and the person killed were withheld pending an investigation.
NBC New York reported the crime scene spanned several blocks and that at least two vehicles sustained damaged. It was not clear if anyone else was hurt, according to the report.
Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh declined to discuss the shooting, saying the case has been referred to the state Office of the Attorney General, which investigates fatal incidents involving police.
Paterson Police Director Jerry Speziale declined to comment, citing the pending investigation.
The incident is the first fatal police shooting in Paterson since Thelonious McKnight was killed Dec. 29, 2021, in an alley on East Main Street.
