An off-duty Texas sheriff's deputy was wounded when a dispute with another person at a Houston nightclub escalated into a shootout early Monday.
The incident involving a Harris County Sheriff's Office deputy happened just before 6 a.m. at a nightclub on Houston's southwest side, KPRC-TV reports. The off-duty deputy—who was out of uniform and not working security as an extra job—was talking to a woman when another man confronted him.
The two had "an exchange of words" before the argument erupted into violence. Both men drew guns and opened fire at each other.
Shots struck both men in the exchange, and they were rushed to the hospital. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez initially said the deputy was critically wounded in the shooting, but he later said the deputy was in fair condition and expected to recover.
Details concerning the other man's condition were not released. No one else was injured in the incident.
The shooting is under investigation, and police believe the two men knew one another. It's unclear if the deputy was a customer at the time of the shooting.
