2 Tenn. Deputies Shot Trying to Stop Kidnapping of 18-Month-Old Child

A chase between Hamilton County sheriff's deputies and a man accused of kidnapping a young child ended in a shootout that left two deputies wounded and the suspect dead.

A man accused of kidnapping an 18-month-old child was fatally shot in a gunfight Sunday that wounded two Tennessee deputies.

The incident began when the Catoosa County Sheriff's Office received a call involving the kidnapping of an 18-month-old child by an armed suspect, according to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office. Catoosa County deputies pursued the suspect—identified as Tyler Lebron Roberts, 33—and the chase led to Hamilton County.

Deputies in Hamilton County used a spike strip and were able to box in the suspect's fleeing vehicle near the Ooltewah exit along Interstate 75. Once his vehicle was disabled, the suspect began shooting at authorities.

Two Hamilton County sheriff's deputies were shot in the exchange, and they were taken to the hospital with injuries that weren't considered life-threatening. The suspect was fatally shot in the incident.

According to the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office, the 18-month-old was not seriously injured and was taken to the hospital for evaluation. 

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is looking into the incident.
