ANDERSON, IN — A Pendleton police officer and another man were injured in a shooting about 2:31 p.m. Tuesday at the Get-Go convenience store near the intersection of School and Broadway streets.
The officer's injuries were not life-threatening, and the other man, 44, was in serious condition, according to Caleb McKnight, public information officer for the Anderson Police Department.
Both were transported to a hospital for treatment, McKnight said.
The man in serious condition was a suspect in a case the officer was investigating, according to Pendleton Police Chief Marc Farrer.
The names of the suspect and the officer have not been released.
During a traffic stop, the officer detained the female driver of the car and was speaking to her when shots were fired by the male passenger from inside the car.
Both parties exchanged gunfire, after which the suspect exited the car and fell to the ground, according to McKnight.
A bystander, Tim Funk, said the suspect was shot in the head and the officer was shot in the shoulder.
The officer was in a pickup truck and the other man was in a sedan at the time of the shooting, according to Funk. Both vehicles remained in the Get-Go parking lot while dozens of officers investigated the scene.
The passenger door of the sedan stood open, while a shoe, a red emergency kit, a handgun and magazine from the gun lay on the pavement nearby.
