A Princeton police officer and an alleged shooter involved in a gunfight early Thursday morning were hospitalized with gunshot wounds, police say.
The person shot faces an aggravated assault against a public servant charge. They had not been booked into the Collin County jail by Thursday morning, records show. It was unclear whether they had an attorney.
The officer responded at around 3:02 a.m. to an assault report at 1610 E. Princeton Dr, according to a news release. The city of Princeton is about 30 miles northeast of downtown Dallas.
The officer located a suspect near the intersection of Dahlia Way and Princeton Crossroads, where the suspect “attacked the officer with a weapon,” according to a Thursday news release.
The suspect and the officer, neither of whom are named in the statement, were shot and transported to hospitals with gunshot wounds. Both were in stable condition, according to the release.
Erin Mudie, a city of Princeton spokesperson, declined to provide additional information and deferred inquiries to the Department of Public Safety.
Princeton police requested the Texas Rangers, the investigative arm of DPS, to investigate the shooting, said Sgt. Kyle Bradford, a department spokesperson.
Generally, smaller police agencies request assistance from the Rangers to investigate shootings involving officers, Bradford said.
