SHELDON, IL — A deputy with the Newton County Sheriff's Department is in critical condition after being shot in the line of duty Sunday evening, police said.

The sheriff's department was assisting the Iroquois County (Illinois) Sheriff's Office with an incident that concluded in Sheldon, Illinois.

"Preliminary reports indicate officers from the Iroquois County Sheriff's Department were engaged in a pursuit of an armed suspect with a hostage," Illinois State Police said.

The pursuit continued into Indiana and the Newton County Sheriff's Dept. became engaged, police said. The suspect, Andrew Roselius, 37, of Clifton, Illinois, exited his vehicle and gunfire was exchanged.

During the incident, Corp. Brandon Schreiber was shot by the Roselius, Newton County Sheriff S.L. Cothran said in a statement. Schreiber, a five-year veteran, was transported to Iroquois Memorial Hospital before being flown to the Carle Trauma Center.

Roselius was pronounced dead on scene. No hostage was located inside the vehicle.

Schreiber remains in critical condition. The Schreiber family has requested privacy as they process this tragedy, the sheriff's department said. Anyone who wants to mail a card can send it to the Newton County Sheriff's Office at 304 E. Seymour St. in Kentland, Ind., 47951.

"The Illinois State Police have assumed responsibility for this investigation," the Newton County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

ISP will lead the investigation. After a thorough investigation, ISP will turn over its investigation to the Iroquois County State's Attorney Office.

The sheriff's department will provide updates and additional details as they become available through the ISP's official channels.

"We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming support and prayers from our law enforcement families, both from Indiana and Illinois, as well as from our community," Cothran said. "Your kindess is deeply appreciated and means more than words can express."
