Jan. 13, 2025
When the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department responded to calls of shots fired at an apartment, an armed suspect opened fire when officers confronted him in the building's lobby.

Three Washington, D.C., police officers were wounded in a gun battle with a shooting suspect in an apartment building lobby early Monday that left the gunman dead.

The incident happened at around 4:30 a.m. when Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to a call concerning a man firing shots in an apartment building, WRC-TV reports. Once at the scene, police confronted the suspect, who ran into an elevator in the building's lobby.

After a few minutes passed, the gunman emerged from the elevator and charged at the officers. They tried to apprehend him when the suspect began shooting, and the officers returned fire.

Shots struck three officers and the gunman, who died at the scene. The officers were rushed to the hospital, and they're in stable condition and expected to recover.

“This is yet another reminder of the daily dangers we face in our city and across the U.S.,” D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith said at a press conference. “I'm very grateful that our officers were able to get through this particular incident without any further injuries.”

The shooting is under investigation.
