A cop was shot and wounded as the NYPD executed a search warrant inside a Lower East Side apartment early Tuesday, officials said.
The gunman was shot by police and rushed to the hospital following a four-hour standoff with police, police sources said.
The officers executed the search warrant inside a Madison St. apartment building near Water St. — part of NYCHA’s Vladeck Houses — at about 5 a.m. when someone inside fired off three to five shots at the officers.
No one was hit, officials said. Cops did not return fire as the gunman barricaded himself inside the apartment, refusing to come out.
Then, about 8:30 a.m., as cops were trying to get the suspect to surrender, he again opened fire at officers, striking an Emergency Services Unit cop in the shoulder.
Cops returned fire police said.
EMS rushed the wounded officer to Bellevue Hospital, where he’s expected to recover.
During the violent stand-off, the gunman was wounded twice, police sources said. He ultimately surrendered and was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
Criminal charges were pending.
Besides cops from the NYPD’s elite Emergency Services Unit, department hostage negotiators were on hand trying to get the gunman to surrender voluntarily.
